Earning your Alteryx Designer Advanced Certification is a great way to test and prove your Alteryx skills. The exam is free and open book, so the pressure is low, feel free to give it an attempt before revising the areas you struggled on.
Before You Register
A few things worth knowing before you book your attempt:
- Format: 2.5 hours, 51 questions total, 48 multiple choice (1 point each) and 3 practical application questions (4 points each). Partial credit is awarded and deducted on matching and "select all that apply" questions, so don't guess randomly on those.
- Attempts: You get one attempt every 24 hours so there's no harm in giving it an attempt as it can be retaken the next day.
Main Topics
The Advanced exam shifts focus away from simple data cleansing toward higher-level workflow logic. Prioritise your study time on these primary areas:
- Macros: Understand the functional differences between Standard, Batch, and Iterative Macros. Focus on configuring control parameters and defining clear iteration exit conditions.
- Analytic Apps: Practice using Interface tools (Tree, Drop Down, Action) to convert workflows into dynamic user applications. Make sure you understand the different use cases and options provided by each interface tool.
- Parsing & Spatial: Master RegEx methods (Parse, Tokenize, Replace, Match) alongside spatial operations like Spatial Match and Find Nearest.
- Advanced Preparation & Data Investigation: Don't neglect tools like Fuzzy Match, Multi-Row Formula (especially multi-condition logic).
- Workflow Control & Error Handling: Get comfortable with the Message, Test, and Block Until Done tools. These control how a workflow behaves under specific conditions and are an easy area to lose points on if you've never used them outside of a real project.
- Reporting: Practice with formatting the different report tools and understanding what each tool covers.
Preparation Tools
- Download Alteryx's own Prep Guide. Alteryx publishes an official Designer Advanced Certification Exam Prep Guide on the Community site it's the most direct signal of what's actually tested and is worth reading before anything else.
- Solve Weekly Challenges: Search the Alteryx Community Weekly Challenges by topic (Macros, RegEx, Apps). Hands-on practice under timed conditions is far more effective than passive reading.
- Explore "Open Example": Right-click any tool in the Designer palette and select Open Example. These pre-built workflows demonstrate exact configuration parameters and outputs in real time this is one of the most underrated study tricks and what I mostly used for gaining a grasp on the reporting tools.
Exam Strategy
- Set Up a Dual-Monitor Workspace: Keep the exam window open on one screen and Alteryx Designer open on the other. Testing tool configurations live during the exam saves time and prevents guessing. I would also recommend having the examples up for the tools your less familiar with.
- Budget time for the 3 Practical's: The 3 practical application questions are worth 4 points each, more than any single multiple-choice question so don't let them get squeezed at the end. Budget realistically (10–15 minutes per practical build) and start them early enough that a mistake doesn't cost you the whole section.
- Bookmark and Move On: The exam allows you to bookmark questions and cycle back to previous ones so don't waste time, just bookmark a tricky question and return to it later.
