What are the most common types of file in Tableau?

Back when I was applying to The Data School and using Tableau Desktop for the first time, I remember not really knowing which type of file to use when saving my dashboard.

So, for anyone else in that boat, here’s a quick explanation of the main differences between the most common Tableau file types, and when to use each one.

Here are some use cases for you to test your knowledge. You’ll find the answers in the end.

  1. You’re working with a very large database and want to speed up your dashboard performance by avoiding live queries.

  1. You’re sending your Tableau dashboard to someone who doesn’t have access to the original data.

  1. You’re working in a project with another data school consultant. You both have access to the same database and you want to send them your Tableau workbook.
